Day 2

Day 2 : Ho Chi Minh City Tour

Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is a fast paced city with a unique mix of French colonial architecture, Chinese influences, a modern entrepreneurial spirit and numerous temples. On this tour, you will take in the highlights of Ho Chi Minh starting with an exploration of Saigon's turbulent past with visits to the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum. The tour continues to Ho Chi Minh's finest examples of French colonial architecture with a visit to the Notre Dame cathedral and Post Office. Enjoy lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant. Your Ho Chi Minh tour continues with a visit to Giac Lam Pagoda, the Cholon Chinese district. Tour concludes at the Ben Thanh market, practice your bargaining skills.
Day 3

Day 3 Mekong Delta

After a high-paced first day, we slow things down today as we head south from the city into the evocative Mekong Delta. There are few more relaxing experiences than a cruise through the laid-back tropical world of the delta, and we've chosen the cosy and comfortable Bassac on which to do it. After a welcome drink and an introduction to the ship and crew we cast off and sail up the Tien Giang River, enjoying lunch on the upper deck en route. In the afternoon we visit a village on the banks of the Mang Thít River, where we can appreciate Delta life firsthand. We stroll through the fruit orchards and rice fields nearby, before returning to the Bassac for sundowner drinks, as the sun sets over Mekong's magical waterways. Dinner will be served whilst the Bassac cruises the Mang Thit River towards our anchorage for the night, downstream from the little market of Tra On.
Day 4

Day 4 Mekong Delta - Ho Chi Minh

A brief visit to Tra On floating market after breakfast is followed by a chance to explore the largest floating market in the region at Cai Rang, where much of the Delta come to trade fruit and other produce from their barges. We disembark here and return to Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 5

Day 5: Siem Reap Arrival – Angkor Thom – Siem Reap

We wave farewell to Vietnam this morning and take the short flight over the border to Siem Reap in Cambodia. After completing customs and immigration procedures, we meet our local guide and drive the short distance to town where we check in and freshen up before our afternoon adventure commences. Hop in a private remork (tuk-tuk) for the 15-minute ride to the South Gate and walk along the ancient city wall with your guide, stopping for photos of magnificent demons lining the causeway. Explore the lost temple of Prasat Chrung for approximately one hour before continuing to the 12th-century Bayon Temple, surrounded by 51 stone towers; each features four serene faces of a smiling bodhisattva. Your knowledgeable guide then accompanies you the Terrace of the Elephants, the Royal Palace and the Terrace of the Leper King, where you can spend up to two hours. Hear fascinating stories about the Khmer kings that once ruled the ancient city. After your private tour, spend your evening at your leisure. If you're feeling social, take a dip in the outdoor pool that hosts a happy hour. Otherwise head to your air-conditioned room and enjoy dinner and drinks ordered from the room service menu.
Day 6

Day 6: Siem Reap – Ta Prohm – Angkor Wat– Banteay Srei – Pre Rup – Siem Reap

Rise early and depart from your hotel approximately 30 minutes before sunrise, traveling by remork to the jungle-covered temple of Ta Prohm. The UNESCO-listed temple complex is one of the most popular at Angkor. The monuments have been left in the same condition in which they were discovered in the 19th century. Return to your hotel for breakfast, after which you visit the world-famous Angkor Wat, another UNESCO World Heritage site and the best preserved of all the temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Your private tour around this magnificent 12th-century structure lasts a few hours. Discover numerous surviving stone temples, once surrounded by wood palaces, public buildings and houses that have since disappeared. Following lunch at a local restaurant in the afternoon, drive to the temple of Banteay Srei, built in the 10th century. Located 19 miles (32 km) from Siem Reap, the small UNESCO-listed temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, but is dubbed ‘Citadel of Women’ for its ornate sandstone carvings, a crown jewel of Angkor art. After your 1.5-hour private tour, take some time to explore on your own and enjoy a provided lunch. When it's time to head back to Siem Reap, you might even catch the sunset descending behind prongs of Pre Rup.
Day 7

Day 7: Siem Reap – Tonle Sap Lake – Siem Reap

Following breakfast, take a 30-minute morning drive by remork to the edge of Siem Reap for a 15-minute ox-cart ride through the countryside. Then continue by air-conditioned vehicle to reach Cambodia’s largest freshwater lake, Tonle Sap. Classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the lake feeds the Mekong River during the dry season and swells during monsoons. Board a local boat at the riverbank for an approximate 30-minute ride to Kompong Phluk, the largest floating village on the lake, where you’ll spend the rest of the morning. Here, observe the fascinating daily activities of the Cambodian villagers who reside along the shore, gaining a better sense of how their lives are shaped by the water’s rhythms. After lunch at a local restaurant, the rest of your day is free to spend as you like. Afternoon we take our flight northbound to Danang, the largest city in Central Vietnam. On arrival a coach will be waiting to transfer us down the coast to one of Vietnam's most magical destinations: the ancient trading port of Hoi An. Our hotel is located on the very edge of the pedestrianised Old Town, making it an ideal spot for personal exploration.
Day 8

Day 8 Hoi An

A short walking tour of the Old Town this morning is designed to help you get your bearings sufficiently to make the most of your afternoon at leisure. The pool at the resort hotel is inviting, or the many wonderful riverside cafes and restaurants might appeal for a spot of people-watching. For those of a more active persuasion bikes can be hired to get out into the countryside, or your Tour guide could help you to arrange a visit to the Cham Dynasty ruins at My Son, an hour's drive from town.
Day 9

Day 9 Hue

After breakfast today we drive onward to the imperial capital of Hue, stopping briefly in Danang to visit the Cham Museum, which contains the finest collection of Cham sculptures in the world. The drive to Hue is one of the most scenic in the country, ascending the Pass of Ocean Clouds before dropping down to the photogenic fishing village of Lang Co beyond. After checking in to our splendid art-deco hotel, La Residence, and freshening up, we head out to enjoy dinner at the private 'garden house' of one Hue's most famous architects. This traditional style house, which is set in a large and attractive formal garden, has connections with the ancient Hue Royal Imperial Court, and in addition to preparing us a sumptuous Vietnamese meal, the owner of the house will also give us a short cooking demonstration and let us try our hands at creating some of Hue's celebrated royal dishes.
Day 10

Day 10 Hue

Hue is set along the banks of the Perfume River, named for the fragrance of tropical flowers said to be carried down from orchards upriver. After a morning exploration of the huge Citadel, home of the Nguyen Emperors, and a cyclo tour through the Old Town, we take a picturesque boat ride up the river to the Thien Mu Pagoda. The countryside surrounding the city is dotted with the tombs of the former emperors, and you may wish to use your free afternoon to explore these grand and atmospheric remnants of Vietnam's imperial past.
Day 11

Day 11 Hanoi

A short flight north brings us from the former to the current capital, and the fantastic jumble of styles and influences that is Hanoi. Our base here is the magisterial Hanoi Hotel, one of the oldest and most refined of Vietnam's colonial properties, located in the French Quarter close to the Opera House and within a few minutes walk of Hoan Kiem Lake. One of the best ways of understanding Vietnamese culture, and the differences between the regions, is through food, and we have arranged for our favourite local food expert, our guide to combine a tour of Hanoi's old town with an introduction to the markets, cuisine and eating habits of North Vietnam. As we stroll through the narrow lanes we will sample pho tiu and bun dau, pick out the best seasonal fruit and maybe stop at a French-influenced patisserie for coffee and cakes. There is no better, or tastier, way to get to know the city.
Day 12

Day 12 : Hanoi City Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a city sightseeing tour of Hanoi with your guide. Start with a visit to Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, located in the center of Ba Dinh Square, where the former leader's embalmed body is on display in a glass sarcophagus. Afterward, learn more about Ho Chi Minh's life and career on a tour of his former residence. Next, head to the historical One Pillar Pagoda, originally constructed in 1049. Your guide can point out the architectural elements that make this one of Vietnam's most iconic temples. After a Vietnamese lunch at a local restaurant, continue on to the Temple of Literature, the country’s first university that dates back to 1070. Stroll different paths among five courtyards to find treasures such as a statue of Confucius guarded by two bronze storks standing on turtles. Then hop in a cyclo for a panoramic tour of the Old Quarter in the afternoon, followed by a visit to Hoan Kiem Lake (Sword Lake). Stop to admire Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Mountain), located on a small islet, and take in the natural surroundings while enjoying a hot brew of fresh coffee (own expense) from one of the many cafés near the beautiful lake. End your day at the Thang Long Theater to watch a Vietnamese water puppet show. This unique, traditional art form originates from rural festivals. Both men and women stand waist-deep in the water to manipulate the puppets, making them move about, talk, laugh and even dance on the surface as the story takes place.
Day 13

Day 13 Hanoi – Halong Bay

Following breakfast at your hotel, you’re driven to the Gulf of Tonkin and Halong Bay, located approx. 112 miles (180 km) east of Hanoi. By midday you’ll board a traditional junk for check-in. Enjoy a seafood lunch on board and a delightful cruise that delivers you to some of the islands and caves in picturesque Halong Bay, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its outstanding natural beauty. “Dragon descending to the sea,“ as the bay is known in Vietnamese, features more than 3,000 limestone islets rising from the clear emerald water, many of them containing beautiful grottoes — a mesmerizing sight. You’ll visit a cave with your guide and have the opportunity to swim alongside the golden sands of Titov beach (depending on weather conditions and water temperature) before dinner and an overnight stay in your superior cabin.
Day 14

Day 14 : Halong Bay - Hanoi

Relax with a morning tai chi class on the sundeck, following the fluid movements of your instructor as you practice this ancient martial art. Then unwind and soak up more sun on the top deck, a perfect spot for photographing the natural wonders of the bay as your light breakfast (think pastries, coffee, and fruit) is served on the boat. From there, visit the Cave of Surprises (Sung Sot Cave), located on Bo Hon Island, which is actually an array of linked limestone islets. Upon arrival, climb the hundred stone steps to the mouth of the cave and explore the lit paths inside on a guided walking tour. The cave is the widest grotto in Halong Bay and features multiple stalactites hanging from its high ceiling! See more stunning sights on your return to the Halong wharf as you enjoy a buffet brunch on the junk. When you arrive back at the Tuan Chau Marina, you'll be met by a vehicle for the four-hour journey back to Hanoi.
Day 15

Day 15: Hanoi Departure

Sadly the tour is over. You will be taken to Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport by your tour guide and waved off on your return flight home
